Nikoline Nygaard is a Postdoc in the Department of Odontology at the University of Copenhagen’s Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She earned a PhD in Health and Medical Sciences from the University of Copenhagen in 2025, with a thesis titled “The Association Between Childhood Oral Health and Cardiometabolic Diseases in Adulthood.” She previously completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research, University of Copenhagen, in 2021, focusing on “The Oral Microbiota and Glucose Tolerance.”
Her research examines associations between poor oral health in childhood and adolescence and the risk of systemic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. She conducts this work using nationwide Danish registry data, particularly from the Danish Health Authority’s Central Odontological Register (SCOR), along with epidemiological and statistical methods. Key publications include the 2026 paper “Childhood oral health is associated with the incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in adulthood” in the International Journal of Cardiology and the 2025 paper “A nationwide registry-based cohort study of the association between childhood dental caries and gingivitis with type 2 diabetes in adulthood” in Acta Diabetologica, as well as her 2025 PhD thesis. She has presented at conferences such as the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions and delivered lectures on oral health and diabetes risk.
