Rate My Professor Quan Vuong

Dr Quan Vuong is Honorary Associate Professor in the School of Science at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in 2012 and Master of Food Technology from the University of Newcastle, as well as a Bachelor of Food Preservation and Processing from Hanoi Agricultural University No. 1, Vietnam. Vuong's research career started in 2008 with a PhD at the University of Newcastle on the bioactives in green tea. He then held postdoctoral fellow positions, lectured, and advanced to Associate Professor in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences, College of Engineering, Science and Environment.

His research focuses on identifying, extracting, purifying, and utilizing bioactive compounds from natural sources like medicinal plants, native Australian flora, marine materials, and food production waste. These compounds offer antioxidant capacity and health benefits against cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, microbial growth, and cancers, while also aiding food preservation by minimizing lipid oxidation and extending shelf-life. Vuong has authored key books including Utilisation of Bioactive Compounds from Agricultural and Food Waste (2017) and Plant Bioactive Compounds for Pancreatic Cancer Prevention and Treatment (2015), numerous book chapters, and over 150 journal articles. He received the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Research and Supervision Excellence (2017), Vice-Chancellor's Award for Research and Innovation Excellence (2015), Faculty of Science Staff Excellence Award (2017), and College of Engineering, Science and Environment Industry Engagement Award (2023). He serves as Section Editor for Current Nutraceuticals, Advisory Board member for Heliyon, and Editorial Board member for Cogent Food & Agriculture and Beverages. Vuong has secured more than $2.8 million in grants and supervised 15 postgraduate completions.
