You can be good anywhere. Here, you can be great.
Your opportunity
The Stay Well team at Southern Cross University plays a vital role in supporting student wellbeing, safety and success. Through counselling, wellbeing programs, health promotion initiatives and early intervention support, the team helps students navigate the challenges of university life and build the skills needed to thrive academically and personally.
As Counsellor, Safety & Wellbeing you will deliver short to medium term counselling and support services while also leading initiatives that strengthen student wellbeing across the University. Approximately 80% of your time will be focused on individual counselling and support, with the remaining 20% dedicated to developing and delivering workshops, wellbeing resources, campaigns and student engagement initiatives.
This is an ideal opportunity for a qualified Social Worker or counselling professional who enjoys variety, values prevention and early intervention, and wants to work in a contemporary university environment supporting a diverse student population, including a large cohort of international students. You’ll join a collaborative and innovative team committed to continuously improving how student wellbeing services are delivered both online and on campus.
You will make an impact by:
Delivering evidence-based counselling, assessment, crisis support, safety planning and referral services to students experiencing personal, academic or wellbeing challenges
Developing and delivering workshops, group programs, wellbeing resources and health promotion initiatives that build resilience and support student success
Supporting students through the University’s stepped care approach, helping them access the right level of support at the right time
Responding to critical incidents and providing advice, care coordination and support to students and key stakeholders within scope of practice
Using outcome measures, data and feedback to evaluate service effectiveness and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
Collaborating with internal teams and external organisations to enhance student wellbeing, safety and engagement across the University
What you will bring
You’re a passionate and student focused wellbeing professional who understands that supporting student success extends beyond one-on-one counselling. You enjoy building connections, delivering engaging programs and creating practical wellbeing initiatives that have a meaningful impact.
You are culturally responsive, adaptable and comfortable working with students from diverse backgrounds and life experiences. You embrace new technologies, enjoy developing innovative approaches to service delivery, and are excited by the opportunity to contribute to a modern, proactive wellbeing service.
To succeed in this role, you will also need:
Qualification in Social Work, Counselling or a related discipline, with current professional registration or membership where applicable. Social workers are strongly encouraged to apply.
A strong understanding of student wellbeing, safety and mental health challenges, particularly within culturally and linguistically diverse communities
Experience designing and delivering workshops, wellbeing programs, health promotion activities or community engagement initiatives
Strong communication, technology and relationship building skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records, use digital systems confidently and adapt to evolving service delivery approaches
