Police Recruit
JOB SUMMARY
This classification exists to prepare an entry level trainee for general duty police work. Employees in this class will be required to attend a department authorized police academy for training in community relations, patrol methods, traffic control, criminal and traffic law, causes of criminality, courtroom procedures, investigating methods, fingerprinting and other crime prevention and law enforcement topics through classroom training, field observation and scenario training. Upon successful completion of the police academy, employees are promoted to the class of Police Officer. Police Recruits report to the Saginaw Valley State University Police Sergeant and the police academy training Staff. The successful candidate is always expected to diligently follow the Mission and Vision of the Saginaw Valley State University Police Department as well as the Core Values of the University.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Graduate from the police academy and become MCOLES licensable
- Acquire a knowledge of police methods, practices, procedures and techniques and apply this knowledge appropriately.
- Respond quickly to emergency situations in which you may not be familiar.
- Work under pressure, occasionally for long periods of time.
- Work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- Work with appropriate safety related gear including a bullet proof vest, firearms, handcuffs, etc.
- Ability to prepare accurate and complete reports in an efficient manner
- Work under a community policing model
- Work cooperatively and courteously with all segments of the campus community.
- Evaluate a situation and make decisions as to appropriate action under pressure in accordance with laws, rules, regulations, and policies.
- Remain in a standing or sitting position for extended periods of time.
- Learn, understand, make inferences, interpret, and enforce laws, codes and regulations.
- Use and properly care for firearms and related police emergency equipment.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Learns to:
- Patrol campus grounds and perimeter in a patrol car, on foot, bike and a 4x4 to ensure a safe environment; including: traffic enforcement, emergency response, law enforcement, etc.
- Coordinate and provide for the delivery of emergency services to campus.
- Receive, investigate and complete reported complaints for the campus community, and other investigative services as requested.
- Secure the scene of the crime, administer first-aid, conduct preliminary investigations, gather evidence, obtain witness statements, make arrests, and prepare detailed reports
- Coordinate criminal prosecutions with federal, state and/or local police agencies and with prosecutor's office(s) for criminal incidents occurring within the university community.
- Serve as liaison with other social service agencies.
- Develop, coordinate and implement crime prevention and community policing programs and projects.
- Interview persons with complaints and make proper disposition or direct them to the proper authorities
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance
