The Horry-Georgetown Technical College Area Commission invites applications and nominations for the position of President of Horry-Georgetown Technical College (HGTC). The Commission seeks a visionary, collaborative, and student-centered leader to build upon the College's tradition of excellence while advancing its mission of transforming lives through education, workforce development, and community partnerships.
Serving Horry and Georgetown counties, HGTC is one of South Carolina's premier comprehensive technical colleges, offering associate degrees, diplomas, certificates, workforce training, and university transfer programs across multiple campuses. The College serves a diverse student population and maintains strong partnerships with business, industry, government, and community organizations to meet the workforce needs of one of the nation's fastest-growing regions.
The President serves as the chief executive officer of the College and reports directly to the Horry-Georgetown Technical College Area Commission. The President provides strategic leadership for all aspects of the institution, advancing student success, academic excellence, workforce development, fiscal stewardship, and community engagement while ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and accreditation standards.
Through an extensive leadership profile process involving the Area Commission, College employees, students, and community members throughout Horry and Georgetown Counties, the College identified the qualities and experiences sought in its next President. The successful candidate will embrace a collaborative leadership philosophy and possess the vision, integrity, and experience necessary to lead a dynamic and growing institution.
The Commission seeks a leader who demonstrates:
Visionary and Innovative Leadership – The ability to establish a shared strategic vision that positions the College to respond to rapid population growth, evolving workforce demands, and changing educational needs. The President should encourage innovation, welcome employee input, and foster continuous improvement.
Exceptional Communication Skills – A transparent, accessible communicator who listens thoughtfully, communicates clearly and consistently, and builds trust through openness, collaboration, and frequent engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
Workforce Development Expertise – A strong understanding of regional labor markets, economic development, employer partnerships, and workforce training. The President will strengthen relationships with business and industry while ensuring academic and workforce programs remain responsive to community needs.
Visible and Approachable Leadership – A collegial, accessible leader who actively engages with faculty, staff, students, and community members across the College's service area. The President should maintain a visible presence on campus and throughout the community.
Academic Leadership – Experience leading academic programs within a complex higher education environment, with an appreciation for teaching, curriculum development, student learning, workforce education, and innovative instructional delivery.
Community Engagement and Relationship Building – A passionate ambassador who represents the College throughout Horry and Georgetown Counties by building meaningful partnerships with community leaders, elected officials, educational partners, and civic organizations.
Integrity and Ethical Leadership – A leader known for honesty, transparency, sound judgment, accountability, and ethical decision-making who inspires confidence among the Commission, employees, students, and community stakeholders.
Commitment to Student Success – A student-centered leader dedicated to expanding access, affordability, retention, completion, workforce readiness, and transfer opportunities while fostering meaningful student engagement.
Support for Faculty and Staff – A collaborative leader who values employees as the College's greatest asset by promoting professional development, equitable opportunities, employee engagement, talent recruitment and retention, and a positive institutional culture.
Minimum requirements:
The preferred candidate will possess:
An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution and a minimum of ten years of successful senior-level academic and/or administrative leadership experience. In lieu of a doctorate, candidates must possess:
A master's degree from a regionally accredited institution and a minimum of ten years of successful executive-level administrative, management, or academic leadership experience.
