Teacher Assistant
POSITION: TEACHING ASSISTANT (Special Education School ages 3-21) – 10 months
SALARY RANGE: A09 $38,026.98 - $54,570.83
LOCATION: A. HARRY MOORE SCHOOL
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under supervision of a certified, professional Teacher in a state school or institution, acts as direct care personnel in the classroom and assists with self-help (toileting, changing diapers for students ages 3 to 21 adolescent and adult students), academic, behavioral (Physically Restrain students with behavior outbursts), social, vocational, and recreational activities designed for children and/or young adults; does other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS: Assists the classroom Teacher in obtaining and preparing materials and equipment for teaching-learning activities including paper, arts and crafts, pictures, visual, and motion picture Technology. Under supervision of a certified Teacher in a state school or institution, acts as direct care personnel in the classroom and assists the students with self-help (toileting, changing diapers for students ages 3 to 21 adolescent and adult students), behavioral (physically restrain students with behavioral outbursts), social, vocational, and recreational activities designed for children and/or young adults; does other related duties as required. Helps prepare visual aids, updates bulletin boards, and arranges displays of student work. Keeps the classroom in a neat and orderly condition, adjusts room lighting and heating, and arranges chairs and desks as required for different activities. Assists in keeping records of attendance, illness, and student performance and behavior.
All teaching assistants are required to possess a high school diploma, with some college preferred. The teaching assistant should have a background working with a multiple disabled population. In addition, the teaching assistant needs to be able to provide academic support to the teachers, physical transfers for students in wheelchairs, self-help (toileting, changing diapers for students ages 3 to 21 adolescent and adult students), physically restrain students with behavioral outbursts ("Handle with Care" Training Provided), and should have patience working with the students. The teacher assistant will receive direction from the teachers and therapists. The direct supervisor of the teaching assistant will be the assistant principal. Additional supervision will come from the Principal and the Pupil Services Coordinator.
NOTE: Since this is an entrance level position, there are no formal education and/or experience requirements. Appointees must be able to physically restrain students ("Handle with Care" Training Provided), toilet train (change diapers of adolescent and adult students) and apply self-care skills, physically lift, move, and position students as needed.
Although not a requirement, candidates holding an active NJ substitute certification are highly preferred.
LICENSE: Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.
PREFERRED EDUCATION: NJ Substitute License or ability to obtain one is preferred.
