About Phil

Dr Phil Dobson is a Senior Lecturer in Electronic & Nanoscale Engineering within the James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow. His research focuses on micro- and nano-fabrication, with particular emphasis on the mechanical and thermal properties of devices and materials at the microscopic level. This includes the development of Atomic Force Microscopy sensors that enable precise measurements on these length scales. His most recent research involves establishing new methods for the controlled growth of carbon nanotubes on micromachined substrates.

Dr Dobson has authored or co-authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings and book chapters. Notable examples include a 2026 paper on a surface enhanced Raman scattering nanotag library based on cucurbit[7]uril controlled nanoparticle aggregates for fast cell imaging, published in the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, and a 2026 article on characterization of heat transfer in 3D CMOS structures using Sideband Scanning Thermal Wave Microscopy, appearing in IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement. He also contributed a book section in 2009 on AFM and development of bio-fouling-resistant membranes, included in the volume Atomic Force Microscopy in Process Engineering published by Butterworth-Heinemann. Dr Dobson supervises postgraduate research students working on topics such as nano-scale measurement and manipulation of heat for healthcare and advanced nanoscale thermal and biomechanical technologies for cancer research. His professional email address is Phil.Dobson@glasgow.ac.uk.
