About Abhinav

Abhinav Dhall is an Associate Professor in the Department of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Monash University. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science from the Australian National University, awarded in 2014, and a Bachelor of Technology with Distinction in Computer Science and Engineering from DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology, awarded in 2006. Prior to his current role, Dhall was affiliated with the Indian Institute of Technology Ropar, where he led the Learning Affect and Semantic Image Analysis group. He also conducted research at the University of Waterloo and the University of Canberra, and served as a visiting scholar at the University of California San Diego and Imperial College London during his doctoral studies.

Dhall’s research focuses on the broad domain of automatic human behaviour understanding. His work centres on deep learning for affective computing, computer vision, and human-centred artificial intelligence. He has received several recognitions, including the Best Doctoral Consortium Paper Award at the ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval in 2013 and the Best Paper Nomination at the IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo in 2012. Dhall contributes to the academic community through project leadership, including ARC-funded initiatives on personalised and responsible avatar agents, and maintains an active publication record in peer-reviewed venues.
