Abraham Olivier is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Fort Hare in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He serves as Head of the Department of Politics and Philosophy and as Research Coordinator of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities. He is Co-Founder and Chair of the Centre for African Phenomenology and Co-Founder of the Centre for Phenomenology in South Africa. He previously held lecturing and research positions at the Universities of Bayreuth, Tübingen, Stellenbosch, and Padua, as well as at the Evangelical University for Social Work in Hamburg. Olivier obtained his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Tübingen in 1996 and his MA in Philosophy from Stellenbosch University in 1990, graduating cum laude.
Olivier is the author of the book Being in Pain and the main editor of the anthology Phenomenology in an African Context. He has edited or co-edited multiple books and special journal issues, including volumes for The Southern Journal of Philosophy, the International Journal of Philosophical Studies, the Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology, Angelaki, Theoria, and the Journal of World Philosophies. His numerous peer-reviewed articles address topics in phenomenology, philosophy of mind, and African philosophy. He is a former Editor-in-Chief of the South African Journal of Philosophy and holds an NRF B rating. Olivier has received recognition including the overall Senior Researcher award at the University of Fort Hare Research Excellence Awards.
