About Adam

Professor Adam Bumby is a Professor of Geology in the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pretoria. He completed his BSc with honours in Geology at the University of St Andrews in the United Kingdom, followed by an MSc in Geology (cum laude) in 1997 and a PhD in Geology in 2000, both from the University of Pretoria. He served as a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Pretoria from 2000 to 2003 before joining the academic staff as a Senior Lecturer in structural geology in 2003. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012 and later to Professor. He served as Head of the Department of Geology from 2019 to 2023.

Professor Bumby’s research specializations include structural geology, with a focus on the structural setting of the Bushveld Complex, the tectonic setting of Proterozoic and Phanerozoic basins on the Kaapvaal Craton, the structural history of the Vredefort dome, and structural controls over groundwater flow. His work also encompasses the development of sedimentary basins during the Precambrian and related global-scale tectonic events. More recently, he has contributed to research on natural hydrogen gas occurrences in South Africa as part of an international consortium. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society and has served as President of its Tectonics Division. He lectures on topics including crustal evolution, structural geology, and historical geology, and has supervised numerous honours, MSc, and PhD students.
