About Adam

Adam Lopez is a Reader in the School of Informatics at The University of Edinburgh. He develops computational models of natural language learning, understanding, and generation in people and machines, with a focus on basic scientific, mathematical, and engineering problems related to these models. His research is especially concerned with models that handle the diversity of morphological, syntactic, and semantic phenomena across the world’s languages. Lopez holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland awarded in 2008, with a dissertation titled Machine Translation by Pattern Matching advised by Philip Resnik; an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland awarded in 2002; and a B.S. in Computer Science from Duke University awarded in 1997. Prior to his current appointment, he has held roles in both academia and industry, including positions as an engineer, scientist, lecturer, and director of artificial intelligence at a startup. He is currently an academic at the University of Edinburgh, where he is affiliated with the Institute of Language, Cognition and Computation. Lopez has advised multiple Ph.D. students who have completed their degrees at the university. His research interests encompass artificial intelligence, natural language and speech processing, computing education, ethics and social responsibility. He maintains an active profile in the field through publications and contributions to conferences and journals in natural language processing.
