About Adam

Dr Adam Mahdi is an Associate Professor and Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. He leads the Reasoning with Machines Lab, which advances research on large language model evaluation, AI safety, agentic AI for science, and human-LLM interaction through mathematical rigour and empirical investigation. His research focuses on digital health and the application of machine learning in social sciences. Prior to joining the Oxford Internet Institute in 2021 as a Departmental Research Lecturer, he served as a Research Fellow at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Engineering Science at the University of Oxford, a Visiting Fellow at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the University of Cambridge, and a Research Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University. He previously held the position of Research Fellow at Wolfson College and Lecturer at Lady Margaret Hall, and is an associate member of St Antony’s College. At the OII, he has served as Director of Graduate Studies and Director of the DPhil Programme in Social Data Science. Dr Mahdi has received recognition for his teaching, including a Teaching Excellence Award from the Social Sciences Divisional Board for his work in machine learning and applied analytical methods.
