Rate My Professor Akshay Deoras

Dr Akshay Deoras is a Senior Research Scientist in Indian Monsoon variability and high-impact weather at the National Centre for Atmospheric Science and the Department of Meteorology, University of Reading. He holds a PhD in Atmosphere, Oceans and Climate from the University of Reading (2018–2022) and an MRes in Climate and Atmospheric Science from the University of Leeds (2016–2017). His research focuses on the dynamics and variability of monsoon systems, extreme precipitation events and heatwave processes, and subseasonal-to-seasonal forecasting, with particular emphasis on the Indian summer monsoon. He leads or contributes to projects including DRENCH, OUTBREAK, MiLCMOP and EUPHEMISMS_CO, and has published peer-reviewed papers on topics such as the role of dry intrusions in monsoon breaks, moist heatwaves in India, the influence of soil moisture on monsoon low-pressure systems, and midlatitude dry air during monsoon withdrawal. Deoras has received awards including finalist in the Physics category of STEM for Britain (2025), AGU Outstanding Reviewer (2022), Best Oral Presentation at the RMetS Conference (2020), and a Government of Maharashtra PhD Scholarship. He serves as a reviewer for journals including Geophysical Research Letters, Journal of Climate and Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, supervises postgraduate and undergraduate students, and has contributed to teaching on hazardous weather analysis and weather systems. His work has been featured in over 300 global media outlets, with appearances on BBC, CNN and other networks, and he has presented research to Parliament.

Deoras maintains active involvement in the Tropical Research Group and Monsoon Working Group at the University of Reading. His contributions extend to expert commentary on global climate reports and studies on monsoon withdrawal and extreme weather impacts.
