Akshay Suvas Desai, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and serves as the Medical Director of the Cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure Program in the Advanced Heart Disease Section at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in 1998. Dr. Desai completed his internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital from 1998 to 2001, followed by fellowships in cardiovascular medicine, vascular medicine, and advanced heart disease at the same institution. He earned a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2004. Dr. Desai is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.
His clinical interests encompass advanced heart failure, cardiomyopathies including myocarditis, cardiac amyloidosis, and cardiac sarcoidosis, adult congenital heart disease, congestive heart failure, and the use of ventricular assist devices. Dr. Desai’s research focuses on improving care and outcomes for patients with heart failure, strategies to reduce readmissions, and the conduct of clinical trials evaluating novel therapies across the spectrum of ejection fraction. He has authored or co-authored hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and has received research support from the American College of Cardiology and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Dr. Desai is active in editorial roles, including as Deputy Editor of JACC: Heart Failure, and has been recognized as a Boston Magazine Top Doctor and Castle Connolly America’s Top Doctor.
