Alberto Caminero Fernandez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at McMaster University, with an affiliation in the Division of Gastroenterology. He also serves as an Associate Member in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. He holds the Douglas Family Chair in Gastroenterology Research, an appointment he received in 2020 for a three-year term. Dr. Caminero Fernandez earned his MD from the Universidad de León. He is a full member of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute, where he serves as Co-Lead of the Fellowships and Innovation Grants Committee.
His research focuses on the gut microbiota and its role in gastrointestinal conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease and gluten-related disorders. He has received research grants, including the 2017 Biocodex Microbiota Foundation National Research Grant in Canada and a 2016 award from Celiac Canada for work on probiotic-based strategies for gluten detoxification. Dr. Caminero Fernandez previously held the position of Assistant Professor at McMaster University and has contributed to the academic community through committee leadership and collaborative research initiatives in digestive health.
