About Alexandre

Alexandre Cunha Ribeiro is a Professor Adjunto in the Department of Biology and Zoology at the Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso (UFMT-Cuiabá). He holds a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from the Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras de Ribeirão Preto at the Universidade de São Paulo (FFCLRP-USP) and a doctorate in Zoology from the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp-Botucatu, 2007). He completed postdoctoral research at the Museu de Zoologia da USP with support from FAPESP.

His research focuses on the systematics, taxonomy, phylogeny, and biogeography of Neotropical freshwater fishes, both recent and fossil, including paleobiology and paleobiogeography. He investigates the relationships between the geological history of South America, distribution patterns, and phylogeny of these fishes to reconstruct biogeographic scenarios. Ribeiro is a permanent faculty member in the Programa de Pós-Graduação em Zoologia at UFMT and serves as curator of the fish collection. He has contributed to publications such as guides on regional fish species and studies on tectonic influences on fish biogeography.
