About Alfredo

Professor Alfredo Iacoangeli is Professor of Bioinformatics and Artificial Intelligence for Genomic Medicine at King’s College London. After a career in Biophysics, he completed his PhD cum laude in Life Sciences in 2016 at Sapienza University of Rome, with a focus on structural bioinformatics including protein structure prediction and protein-peptide interactions. He joined King’s College London in March 2016 and leads a joint programme between the Department of Basic & Clinical Neuroscience and the Department of Biostatistics & Health Informatics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. This programme develops computational approaches using statistical, machine learning and bioinformatics methods to investigate the biological basis of neurodegenerative diseases and applies AI and statistical methods to large multi-omics and clinical datasets to advance personalised medicine solutions for these conditions.

His research interests centre on bioinformatics, machine learning, genomics, personalised medicine, motor neurone disease and neurodegeneration. He teaches MSc modules in bioinformatics and interpretation and data quality assurance in genome analysis, as well as advanced bioinformatics, and contributes to Centre for Doctoral Training courses on next-generation sequencing data. Professor Iacoangeli has received the ENCALS 2021 award, the Genes 2022 Young Investigator Award in Human Genomics and Genetic Diseases, and the Paulo Gontijo Award 2024. He serves as NIHR Maudsley BRC MND Theme Deputy Lead, academic lead for partnerships at the EPSRC-funded DRIVE-Health Centre for Doctoral Training, and holds additional roles including former Project MinE Data Infrastructure working group Chair and NIHR BioResource Centre Maudsley Rare Diseases lead. He delivered his inaugural lecture as Professor in April 2026.
