About Aluísio

Aluísio Augusto Cotrim Segurado is a Full Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Parasitology at the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP). He graduated in Medicine from FMUSP in 1980 and earned his master's degree in 1991, doctorate in 1994, and livre-docência in 2001, all in Infectious and Parasitic Diseases from the same institution. His academic career includes appointments as Assistant Professor in 1983, progression through faculty ranks, and attainment of the titular professorship in 2012. Segurado's research centers on clinical retrovirology, with a focus on HIV/AIDS, HTLV infections, vulnerability to viral acquisition, disease progression, tropical medicine, and global health. He has supervised numerous master's, doctoral, and postdoctoral students and contributed to the response to the HIV epidemic in Brazil through integrated clinical care, scientific research, and social responsibility initiatives.

Segurado has held key administrative roles at FMUSP and USP, including head of department, coordinator of medical residencies, president of the Postgraduate Commission and the International Relations Commission, Executive Vice-Rector for International Relations, first coordinator of the Office for Management of Academic Performance Indicators (Egida), and Pro-Rector of Undergraduate Studies. He served as director of the Central Institute of the Hospital das Clínicas during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2025, he was elected and appointed Rector of the Universidade de São Paulo for the 2026–2030 term. His work integrates medical training, research, and university governance, with emphasis on academic processes, international partnerships, and institutional modernization.
