About Amit

Professor Amit Chakma is the Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Western Australia. He assumed the role in July 2020. Prior to this appointment, he served as President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Western Ontario from 2009 to 2019. Before that, he was Provost and Vice-President Academic at the University of Waterloo from 2001 to 2009. His earlier academic career included positions as Dean of Engineering and Vice-President Research at the University of Regina, and as a professor of chemical engineering at the University of Calgary from 1988 to 1996.

Professor Chakma holds a Diploma in Engineering from the Algerian Petroleum Institute (1982), a Master of Applied Science and a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of British Columbia (1987). He also received honorary degrees including a DEng from the University of Waterloo (2011) and a DSc from the University of Dhaka (2017). He is a registered professional engineer (PEng) and holds the ICD designation. His research interests have centered on chemical engineering topics including natural gas engineering, petroleum waste management, carbon dioxide capture, and greenhouse gas mitigation. He has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in these areas. In addition to university leadership, he served as Chair of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities from 2017 to 2019.
