Dr. Amlan Das is an Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of Calcutta. He earned his B.Sc. in Zoology Honors from the University of Calcutta in 1994, followed by an M.Sc. in Zoology with Entomology specialization from the same institution in 1997. He completed his Ph.D. at Visva Bharati University in 2004, focusing on acridid biomass and edibility. His career includes appointments as Assistant Professor at D.B. College under West Bengal State University from 2005 to 2013, Assistant Professor at the University of Calcutta from 2013 to 2017, and Associate Professor since 2017.
Dr. Das specializes in entomology, with research interests centered on insect behavior, metabolism, chemical ecology, grasshopper and locust biology, and edible insects. He has held postdoctoral and visiting scientist positions at institutions including the University of Colorado Denver, the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig in Germany, and the University of São Paulo in Brazil. His contributions include numerous awards and fellowships such as the DAAD German Visiting Scientist Award, TWAS fellowship, BOYSCAST award, and RAMAN fellowship. He has authored or co-authored publications on topics including insect gut microbiota, edible insects, and pest management, and maintains active research projects funded by SERB and other agencies. Dr. Das is a member of organizations including the International Union for the Study of Social Insects and the Orthopterists’ Society.
