About An-Wen

Dr. An-Wen Chan (MD, DPhil, FRCPC) is the Phelan Professor at Women’s College Research Institute and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Dermatology at the University of Toronto. He also serves as Professor at the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation and as Adjunct Scientist at ICES. After earning his MD from the University of Calgary in 2000, he completed a DPhil in Public Health at the University of Oxford in 2003 as a Rhodes Scholar. He finished his dermatology residency at the University of Toronto and a Mohs micrographic surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Dr. Chan’s research focuses on improving the conduct, reporting, and transparency of clinical trials, including his leadership of the SPIRIT initiative for trial protocols and contributions to the World Health Organization’s International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. He also conducts clinical trials and epidemiological studies on the prevention and management of high-risk skin cancers, particularly in solid organ transplant recipients, and directs a specialized transplant dermatology clinic. He is the founding managing director of the Skin Investigation Network of Canada and has served as research director for the University of Toronto dermatology residency program, director of the International Transplant Skin Cancer Collaborative, and Special Advisor to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. His work has produced high-impact publications in journals such as JAMA, Lancet, BMJ, and Nature Medicine, with an H-index of 54 and over 74,000 citations. Awards include the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine Rising Star Award in 2014, the William Goldie Prize and Travel Award in 2019, and the Temerty Medicine Research Excellence Award in 2024.
