About Ana Cristina Aoun

Ana Cristina Aoun Tannuri is Full Professor of Pediatric Surgery and Liver Transplantation at the Department of Pediatrics of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP). She graduated from FMUSP in 1998, completed residency training in General Surgery (1999–2000) and Pediatric Surgery (2001–2003) at the Hospital das Clínicas of FMUSP (HC-FMUSP), served as Preceptor of the Pediatric Surgery Discipline (2004–2005), and joined the clinical staff of HC-FMUSP in 2007. She earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Surgery from FMUSP in 2007 with a thesis on liver regeneration and the effects of immunosuppressive drugs in growing organisms, and became a tenured professor in 2011 following a thesis on partial ligation of hepatic ducts in growing organisms. Since February 2022 she has served as Head of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and Liver Transplantation at the Instituto da Criança e do Adolescente (ICr) of HC-FMUSP, where she coordinates the pediatric liver transplantation program that recently performed its thousandth procedure. Her clinical practice encompasses general pediatric surgery with emphasis on esophageal surgery, video-assisted surgery, neonatal surgery, and oncology, in addition to liver transplantation.

Professor Tannuri coordinates the Pediatric Surgery course at the undergraduate level and participates in the disciplines of Surgical Technique and Experimental Surgery; she has been honored by every FMUSP graduating class since 2015 and served as patron or godmother for multiple classes. She coordinates the Medical Residency Program in Pediatric Surgery and the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program at FMUSP and supervises residents in pediatric and general surgery. In strictu sensu postgraduate education she has supervised four master’s and ten doctoral students. She directs the Pediatric Surgery Research Laboratory (LIM-30), developing experimental models of liver and intestinal transplantation, liver regeneration, biliary cirrhosis, ischemic pre- and postconditioning, short bowel syndrome, and related topics in newly weaned rats. She has authored 119 papers indexed in PubMed, many as lead author, participated in 32 research projects funded by FAPESP and CNPq (principal investigator on five), and oversaw two doctoral fellowships and 18 scientific initiation grants. In 2022 she was a visiting professor at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She has received 23 awards at national and international conferences and was honored by the Brazilian Air Force with the Santos Dumont Medal of Merit for services to society, particularly in pediatric liver transplantation.
