About Andrea

Dr Andrea Patriarca is Senior Lecturer in Mycology at Cranfield University in the Centre for Soil, Agrifood and Biosciences. She holds a PhD in Chemical Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she began her research and teaching career in 1997. Prior to joining Cranfield University in 2023, she served as Associate Professor and Head of the Food Mycology research group at the University of Buenos Aires and the Institute of Mycology and Botany (INMIBO, CONICET), and as an Independent Researcher of the Argentinean National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICET). She has also held visiting scientist positions at the Technical University of Denmark, the University of Lleida and the University of Extremadura in Spain, and Cranfield University.

Dr Patriarca is an international reference in Alternaria taxonomy and mycotoxins, with over 25 years of research focused on fungal spoilage of plant-based food products, mycotoxigenic fungi, fungal taxonomy and ecophysiology, secondary metabolite production, and strategies to minimise food contamination. Her work addresses fungal contamination in crops and processed foods, with emphasis on Alternaria and Fusarium in cereals and vegetables, the effects of environmental factors and climate change on mycotoxin accumulation, and risk assessment in food chains. She has been selected for the 2023-2027 Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives expert roster and is a partner in the MYTOX-SOUTH international cooperation network on mycotoxin research. Dr Patriarca has received grants and awards including those from Fundación Carolina and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Argentina, CONICET Young Researchers External Fellowships, the Thalmann Program at the University of Buenos Aires, and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation of Argentina. She collaborates with food industries on reducing mycotoxin risks and provides consultancy on fungal spoilage and contamination issues.
