Dr. Andreas Bender serves as Professor for Machine Learning in Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, where he analyzes heterogeneous chemical, biological, and medical data. Before joining Khalifa University, he was Professor for Molecular Informatics at the University of Cambridge and held roles as Director for Digital Life Sciences at Nuvisan in Berlin as well as Associate Director for Data Science and AI in the Clinical Pharmacology & Safety Sciences group at AstraZeneca in Cambridge, United Kingdom. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge and a Diplom-Chemiker degree from the University of Frankfurt. Prior appointments include positions in the Lead Discovery Informatics group at Novartis in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

In his research, Andreas Bender integrates and analyzes data from structural and bioactivity sources, gene expression, cellular imaging, pathways, and electronic health records to support clinically relevant decision-making in drug discovery, chemical biology, and in silico drug safety. He has contributed to the establishment of biotech companies including Healx Ltd. for data-driven drug repurposing and PharmEnable Ltd. for designing novel chemistry for challenging targets, both based in Cambridge, United Kingdom, as well as involvement with Pangea Bio focused on CNS drug discovery. His work emphasizes the application of AI, machine learning, cheminformatics, and bioinformatics methods across life science data.
