About Andres

Andres J. Acosta, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, serving as a consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Internal Medicine. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Health Science magna cum laude and a Doctor of Medicine magna cum laude from Universidad San Francisco de Quito in 2002 and 2006, respectively. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy in Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in 2009, followed by an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Florida Shands Hospital. Dr. Acosta joined Mayo Clinic for a clinical fellowship and NIH T32 postdoctoral research fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, completing these in 2015. He also holds a certificate in statistics, epidemiology, and clinical research from Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Acosta leads the Precision Medicine for Obesity Lab and has served as the Delaney Family Director of the Nutrition Obesity Research Program at Mayo Clinic since 2024. His research focuses on gastrointestinal physiology, particularly the regulation of food intake, appetite, satiation, satiety, gastric function, gastrointestinal hormones, genetics, pharmacotherapy, and pharmacogenomics of obesity. He utilizes techniques including genetics, physiology, pharmacology, proteomics, metabolomics, and imaging to develop individualized obesity therapies. Dr. Acosta is board certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Obesity Medicine. He has received numerous honors, including the 2024 Early Career Innovator Award, the 2025 Digestive Disease Week Shark Tank Award, the 2024 Best Invention of the Year from Time Magazine, and various awards from the American Gastroenterological Association and Mayo Clinic. He holds leadership roles such as Chair of the Obesity, Metabolism and Nutrition Section of the American Gastroenterological Association and has contributed extensively to the academic field through research, committee service, and professional memberships.
