Andrew Lensen is a Senior Lecturer in Artificial Intelligence at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. He received his BSc, BSc (Hons 1st class), and PhD degrees in computer science from Victoria University of Wellington.
He serves as Programme Director of Artificial Intelligence. Lensen specialises in explainable and interdisciplinary artificial intelligence. His research explores the social and ethical implications of AI, with applications in areas such as ecology and legal decision-making. He also maintains interests in genetic programming, nonlinear dimensionality reduction, and aspects of deep learning including embedding and manifold learning methods. Lensen is an active science communicator, contributing op-eds, interviews, and expert commentary on AI-related topics. In 2026, he received the Critic and Conscience of Society award.
