Professor Andrew C. Whitelaw is an Associate Professor and Head of the Division of Medical Microbiology in the Department of Pathology at Stellenbosch University, a position he has held since December 2012. He also serves as Principal Specialist at Tygerberg Hospital NHLS. He holds the qualifications MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand, MSc in Medical Microbiology from the University of Cape Town, and FC Path (SA) Micro. His research focuses on the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance, the clinical impact and control of antimicrobial resistance and hospital-acquired infections, and genomic diagnostics and surveillance. He is a past president of the Infection Control Society of Southern Africa and has served two terms on the South African Ministerial Advisory Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance. Professor Whitelaw brings expertise in infection control, antimicrobial stewardship, and translational health systems research.
