About Angelina

Dr. Angelina Weenie is Dean of the Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research, and Applied Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island. She is Cree (nehiyaw) and a fluent speaker of the Cree (y) dialect from Sweetgrass Nation in Saskatchewan. Dr. Weenie holds a BEd (1979), BA (1989) in English, a postgraduate diploma (1996) in Indian and Northern Education, and an MEd (2002) from the University of Saskatchewan, as well as a PhD (2010) in Education from the University of Regina. She is a tenured associate professor at the First Nations University of Canada, where she previously served as department head from 2002 to 2012 and as program coordinator of Indigenous education from 2016 to 2018.

Her research and teaching interests include Indigenous epistemology, culturally responsive pedagogy, approaches to Indigenous language reclamation, land-based pedagogy, and research methods with Indigenous peoples. Dr. Weenie has contributed to the development of the Master of Indigenous Language Education (MILED) program in partnership with the University of Regina and to a new Master of Indigenous Education (MIED) program. She participates in the Global Academic Teacher Education (GATE) partnership exploring changes to teacher education from a global Indigenous perspective and was an invited speaker at the GATE conference in Belgium in 2023. Dr. Weenie recently co-authored the book Dance Your Style: Cree Pedagogy, which examines how Indigenous people can advance Indigenous knowledge in education and research and analyzes the roles of First Nations communities and Elders in creating space for Indigenous knowledge in universities.
