About Angus

Professor Angus Forbes holds the FEND Chair of Clinical Diabetes Nursing at King’s College London in the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care. He maintains an honorary appointment as a specialist diabetes nurse at King’s College Hospital. His prior positions encompass Senior Lecturer in Diabetes at King’s College London, Lecturer in Health Services Research at University College London Medical School, and roles as a Health Visitor and District Nurse in East London. Professor Forbes leads the MSc programme in Diabetes Clinical Care and Management and supervises a number of funded PhD students. He is a past vice-president of the International Diabetes Federation and has contributed to national guidelines concerning diabetes care for older people in hospitals, end-of-life care, and dementia care for people with diabetes. Clinically, he operates a motivational enhancement clinic for individuals with Type 1 diabetes.

Professor Forbes maintains an active research portfolio centred on the development and evaluation of clinical, psychological and educational interventions to enhance diabetes care and outcomes. His key areas of focus include reproductive health and pregnancy in diabetes, diabetes in older people, and diabetes in younger people during transition periods. Research methods employed encompass clinical trials, evaluations of complex interventions, epidemiological studies utilising large datasets, data synthesis, and qualitative research. Recent and ongoing projects address a pan-European survey of diabetes nurses on the impact of COVID-19, diabetes prevention in women with gestational diabetes mellitus, preconception care in women with Type 2 diabetes, psychologically modelled education interventions for young people with Type 1 diabetes, supportive interventions for adults with new-onset Type 1 diabetes, the relationship between cognitive impairment and diabetic retinopathy, glycaemic variability and mortality in older people with diabetes, the impact of lipohypertrophy on glucose variation in Type 1 diabetes, and trials of virtual clinics to improve primary care diabetes outcomes.
