UKZN celebrates 20 top first-year students with Vice-Chancellor's Circle of Excellence Awards for stellar 2025 matric results, amid KZN's record 90.6% pass rate.

Professor Anil Chuturgoon is a Professor in the Discipline of Medical Biochemistry in the School of Laboratory Medicine and Medical Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He completed his BSc, BSc (Hons) and MSc degrees in Toxicology at the University of Natal and obtained his PhD in toxicology and epigenetics from UKZN. He previously served as Dean of Research in the College of Health Sciences from 2019 to 2024 and is currently Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation. His research focuses on epigenetic mechanisms in toxicology and their implications for human disease, with particular expertise in food toxins and mycotoxins; eight of his publications are included in the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences toxicogenomic database. He is a B-rated researcher by the National Research Foundation of South Africa and has been recognised among UKZN’s top 30 researchers in multiple years. Professor Chuturgoon is a recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award and serves on editorial boards including Scientific Reports. He is a member of the South African Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the South African Association of Clinical Biochemists and the Society of Toxicology. He has published over 210 peer-reviewed papers, contributed 12 book chapters, edited two academic books including one on nanomedicine, and presented extensively at conferences. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students to completion, including over 180 Master’s and 50 PhD candidates. Professor Chuturgoon played a key role in establishing the Department of Medical Biochemistry during the 2005 institutional merger.
