Dr Anthony Brennan is a postdoctoral researcher and Research Assistant in the Department of Psychology at Swansea University. He completed his PhD at Swansea University under the supervision of Professor Hayley Young and Emeritus Professor David Benton. Prior to returning to academia, he worked as a young person’s psychotherapist and consultative supervisor in integrative therapeutic methods. He is an active member of the SNAC and GREAT research groups and holds the status of Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Anthony’s research focuses on interoception, eating behaviour, and the psychophysiological mechanisms that contribute to aberrant or disinhibited eating across the lifespan, including work with older adults and children. He has extensive experience in laboratory-based and remote online research, including the design and implementation of blinded randomised controlled trials involving psychophysiology, nutrition, metabolic responses, and behavioural tasks. His contributions extend to projects on nutrition, sleep, memory, gambling, and translational research methods. He has presented at international conferences, delivered public engagement activities including science festivals, and taught widely across the university, including designing and delivering modules for a BA (Hons) adult learner programme in areas such as body image, eating disorders, and reflexive psychotherapy skills. Key publications include co-authored papers in the International Journal of Obesity (2022), Appetite (2023), Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews (2022), Nutrition Research (2024), and Nutrients (2025), along with his doctoral thesis on age differences in eating traits associated with risk of obesity and the role of interoception.
