About Anthony

Anthony Medrano served as the National University of Singapore Presidential Young Professor of Environmental Studies at Yale-NUS College and as an assistant professor in the Department of History at the National University of Singapore. He holds a BA in political science from Humboldt State University, an MA from the University of Hawaii, and a PhD in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to his appointments at NUS, Medrano was a Ziff Environmental Fellow at the Harvard University Center for the Environment from 2017 to 2019.

Medrano is a historian of the Asian marine environment whose research examines the interplay between people and fish, science and society, and technology and nature, with a focus on Southeast Asia. His work has explored topics including the role of fish in the emergence of modern Asia, the edible ocean in the age of climate change, and Singapore's seafood heritage. He is co-editor of Wild Life: Stories of Singapore Biodiversity (2025), editor of Fishways (2025) and Lala-Land: Singapore's Seafood Heritage (2024), which received the Juliet David Best Food Book Award in 2025, and author of a forthcoming book under contract with Yale University Press titled The Edible Ocean: Science, Industry, and the Rise of Urban Southeast Asia. Medrano received the Early Career Teaching Award in 2023 at Yale-NUS College. He continues affiliations with the Asia Research Institute and the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum at NUS and serves as president of the Pacific Circle.
