About Arie

Prof. Arie Zaban serves as President of Bar-Ilan University, a position he has held since October 2017. He previously served as Vice President for Research and as the founding Director of the Bar-Ilan Institute for Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials (BINA). Prof. Zaban joined Bar-Ilan University as a bachelor’s degree student after completing service as a pilot in the Israel Air Force. He earned a B.Sc. in Chemistry summa cum laude and a Ph.D. in Electrochemistry with highest distinction from Bar-Ilan University. Following his doctorate, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in the United States, focusing on photophysics and photoelectrochemistry.

Prof. Zaban is a full professor in the Department of Chemistry within the Faculty of Exact Sciences. His research centers on materials science and renewable energy, including solar energy, dye-sensitized solar cells, nanoporous semiconductor electrodes, and hybrid organic-inorganic systems. He has authored over 230 publications in refereed journals with more than 27,000 citations and an h-index of 80, along with five book chapters. Prof. Zaban has received numerous honors, including the Israel Chemical Society Prize for Outstanding Young Scientist, the Michael Landau Research Prize in Renewable Energy, the Israeli Vacuum Society Research Excellence Prize, and the Israel Chemical Society Prize of Excellence. He founded five start-up companies based on his patents. Prof. Zaban served as chairman of the Association of University Heads in Israel from 2022 to 2024.
