About Arthur

Professor Arthur Lowery is a Professor and ARC Laureate Fellow in the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Monash University. He holds a PhD in Laser Modeling from the University of Nottingham and a BSc (Hons) in Applied Physics with Electronics, First Class with Honours, from Durham University. Appointed Chair of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Monash in 2004, Lowery has founded two companies, Virtual Photonics Pty Ltd (now VPIphotonics) and Ofidium Pty Ltd, and has published more than 320 scientific papers. He is the Director of the Monash Vision Group, which develops a cortical bionic eye implant funded by the Australian Research Council’s Special Research Initiative in bionic vision. Lowery is a Fellow of the IEEE, the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He serves as a Chief Investigator in the Centre for Integrative Brain Function, focusing on brain-machine interfaces, and was previously a Science Leader in the ARC Centre of Excellence in Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems (CUDOS). His research encompasses optical communications, nonlinear photonic processing, optical OFDM systems, and electro-photonic interchanges, with 15 patents in these areas. Lowery has led projects on distributed ultra-fast optical clocks, photonic circuits, and restoring vision with wireless multi-electrode cortical devices.
