Sir Ashley Bloomfield is a Professor in the School of Population Health at the University of Auckland, where he joined in January 2023. He holds the positions of Director of the Public Policy Impact Institute, which he is leading the establishment of as its inaugural chair, and Chair of the Governing Council for Te Poutoko. He studied medicine at the University of Auckland, graduating with an MBChB in 1990, and later earned an MPH with first-class honours in 1997. He is a Fellow of the New Zealand College of Public Health Medicine (FNZCPHM) and holds the title KNZM. Prior to his academic appointment, he served as Director-General of Health and Chief Executive of the New Zealand Ministry of Health, bringing over 25 years of experience in public policy and public health medicine. In his current role, he teaches on public health and leadership and contributes to governance in Pacific and global health research initiatives.
His academic background combines clinical training in medicine with specialisation in public health. Bloomfield has participated in reviews such as the 2015 review of the Master of Public Health programme at the School of Population Health and serves as New Zealand Co-Chair of relevant working groups. He continues to hold the position of Chief Executive at PHF Science alongside his university responsibilities.
