About Atiqur

Professor Atiqur Rahman serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Geography in the Faculty of Natural Sciences at Jamia Millia Islamia University in New Delhi. He joined the university as Lecturer in October 2000, advancing to Senior Lecturer in 2004, Reader in 2009, Associate Professor in 2012, and Professor in 2015. His academic qualifications include a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Chemistry, Geography, and Geology, an M.Sc. in Geography, an M.Phil. in Environmental Geography, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Geography, all from Aligarh Muslim University, along with an M.Sc. in Geo-informatics from Uttarakhand Open University. He has held postdoctoral and visiting scientist positions at institutions including the UFZ Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany, and has collaborated on projects with Arizona State University and other international partners.

Professor Rahman’s research focuses on urban environmental management, remote sensing and GIS applications, water resources, climate change impacts, and urban heat island effects. He has led or contributed to major funded projects, including NASA-supported studies on urbanization and desert environments, Ministry of Environment and Forests initiatives on groundwater monitoring, and recent grants from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for urban heat mitigation research. He has been recognized among the world’s top 2% scientists by Stanford University rankings and has served in roles such as Honorary Deputy Director (Academics) at Jamia Millia Islamia and coordinator for UGC Special Assistance Programme initiatives. His contributions include extensive publications, international collaborations, and committee memberships in areas related to technology needs assessment for climate change.
