About Atsushi

Professor Atsushi Okamoto is a faculty member in the Department of Environmental Studies for Advanced Society at Tohoku University Graduate School of Environmental Studies. He earned his bachelor's degree in geology from the University of Tokyo in 1998, followed by a master's degree in geology from the same institution in 2000 and a PhD in science in 2003. His early career included positions as a JSPS Special Research Fellow and roles at Shizuoka University before joining Tohoku University as an assistant in 2007. He advanced to associate professor in 2011 and was appointed full professor in 2020.

Okamoto's research centers on geofluid science, including fluid-rock interactions, metamorphism, hydrothermal alteration, and geothermal processes. His work encompasses numerical simulations, hydrothermal experiments, and studies of resource geology and environmental geology. He has contributed numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics such as reaction-induced fracturing, serpentinization, and supercritical geothermal systems. Okamoto leads the Geomaterial and Energy laboratory and participates in collaborative research projects at Tohoku University.
