About Barry

Barry Halliwell is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore (NUS). He graduated with a BA in biochemistry from the University of Oxford and earned a DPhil in plant biochemistry from Oxford in 1973. He later received a DSc from the University of London for his work on free radical reactions. Halliwell began his academic career lecturing at Portsmouth Polytechnic and then joined King’s College London in 1974, where he rose to Professor of Medical Biochemistry. He held a visiting professorship at the University of California, Davis, from 1995 to 1999. After a sabbatical at NUS in 1998, he moved permanently to Singapore in 2000 as Chair of the Department of Biochemistry.

At NUS, Halliwell served as Head of the Department of Biochemistry, founding Executive Director of the NUS Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering, and the university’s first Deputy President (Research and Technology) from 2006 to 2015. He subsequently held roles as Senior Advisor to the President and is currently Senior Advisor for Academic Appointments and Research Excellence in the Office of the Provost. His research focuses on free radicals and antioxidants in biological systems and their roles in human diseases, including Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative disorders. He co-authored the textbook Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine, now in its fifth edition. Halliwell has received numerous honors, including the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2010, the President’s Science and Technology Medal in 2013, the Outstanding Service Award from NUS in 2023, and recognition as a Citation Laureate in 2021.
