Professor Basil Sharp is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Auckland Business School within the Faculty of Business and Economics. He holds the position of Energy Education Chair in Energy and Resource Economics and previously served as Director of the Energy Centre. He joined the Department of Economics in 1990. Professor Sharp received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in resource economics. His research focuses on the application of economics and econometric methods to contemporary energy, resource and environmental problems, with recent emphasis on the impact of renewables on electricity prices, the complementarity of hydro and wind energy, energy efficiency, and the electrification of transport. He emphasizes collaboration across disciplines to address real-world energy challenges and supports the translation of academic research into practical applications benefiting industry, government and the community.
Throughout his career, Professor Sharp has contributed to the field of energy and resource economics through teaching, supervision of postgraduate students and leadership of the Energy Centre. Following his retirement, he has continued select supervisory responsibilities. His work underscores the importance of economic analysis in informing policy and practice in sustainable energy systems.
