About Bayan

Professor Bayan Sharif serves as Provost of Khalifa University, a position he assumed in 2021 after serving as Acting Provost since 2018. In this role, he oversees strategic academic planning, faculty affairs, and research development across the university. Prior to this, he was Dean of the College of Engineering at Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research beginning in 2012 and continued in the role following the 2017 merger. His academic career spans more than three decades with a focus on engineering and digital communications. He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Queen’s University Belfast in 1984 and a Doctorate from Ulster University in 1988. After a Research Fellowship at Queen’s University, he joined Newcastle University in the United Kingdom in 1990, where he was promoted to Full Professor of Digital Communications in 2000. In 2013, Newcastle University awarded him a Doctor of Science in Engineering for his work on signal processing and optimization algorithms for acoustic and radio communications. Before joining Khalifa University, he served as Head of the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at Newcastle University for seven years and led the Communications and Signal Processing Research Group, establishing the SEALAB research laboratory focused on sensors, electromagnetics, and acoustics.

Professor Sharif’s research interests include digital communications, DSP algorithms for receiver structures, and wireless network optimization. He has supervised more than 50 PhD students and authored more than 300 publications. He has led major research initiatives funded by UK, EU, and industry partners totaling over $8 million. In 2018, he served as Executive Chair of IEEE GLOBECOM. He is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
