About Ben Chester

Ben Chester Cheong is an Associate Academic Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Centre for Environmental Law (APCEL), Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore (NUS). He serves as a Lecturer in the School of Law at the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) since December 2018, where he received permanent status in 2021. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) with First Class Honours from the University of Exeter (2014), a Master of Law (LL.M.) from the University of Cambridge (2015), and is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Cambridge researching the legal interactions between company law and corporate environmental sustainability. He is dual-qualified as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore and a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales.

Cheong’s research focuses on company law, environmental law, sustainability, ESG, corporate governance, AI law, contract law, and public law. He has published extensively in leading journals including the Journal of Environmental Law, Transnational Environmental Law, Journal of Business Law, Company Lawyer, and others, with works on topics such as intergenerational justice in corporate law, corporate liability for environmental harms, and AI legal personhood. His publications have been cited by the Singapore government, INTERPOL, and WIPO. He has received awards including the SUSS Outstanding Teaching Award (2022), Excellence in Teaching Award (2021), and the inaugural MOE-START overseas PhD scholarship (2024). Cheong is concurrently Counsel at Rajah & Tann Singapore LLP, Visiting Fellow at the University of Reading School of Law, and Centre Researcher at the Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (C-EENRG). He has served in various academic and professional roles, including as a Tripos Supervisor at the University of Cambridge and panel judge for The Global Undergraduate Awards.
