About Benoît

Professor Benoît Majerus is Full Professor and Chief Scientist 1 in European history, Social history, History from below 20th century at the University of Luxembourg. He is affiliated with the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) in the Department of Contemporary European History. His research topics include World War One, World War Two, the history of psychiatry, and the history of tax havens. He earned his PhD in 2004 from the Université libre de Bruxelles on the occupation of Belgium during the World Wars. Since January 2011 he has held positions at the University of Luxembourg, advancing to Full Professor. He has conducted research stays in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Luxembourg, the USA, France, and Germany. Professor Majerus is the recipient of a prestigious ERC grant for a research project that employs artificial intelligence to reconstruct the history of offshore shell companies. In 2025 he co-authored a chapter providing a critical history of the Grand Duchy’s financial centre as part of a multidisciplinary study on Luxembourg’s tax competitiveness released by the Scientific Unit of the Chamber of Deputies. He speaks English, French, Dutch, and German.

His professional contributions encompass editorial work, including co-editing volumes on medical histories of Belgium, and ongoing projects in digital history and contemporary European history.
