About Bernard

Professor Bernard Corfe is Professor of Human Nutrition & Health at Newcastle University. His original training was in bacterial genomics and gene-regulation. After working in cancer cell biology, he developed interests in the mechanisms by which nutrients, and specifically short-chain fatty acids, regulate cell death pathways and how these processes differ from the actions of chemotherapeutics. He was appointed as lecturer in nutrition at Sheffield University, where he served as Lead for Cellular and Molecular Nutrition and later as Trustee and honorary programmes officer of The Nutrition Society.

He joined the Human Nutrition Research Centre at Newcastle University in March 2021, continuing and expanding his focus on nutrition and cancer. His longstanding research interests centre on the role of nutrition in the prevention of cancers, particularly in preventing the progression of transformed cells and recurrent neoplasms. His work is multidisciplinary, encompassing molecular and cellular approaches, in silico methods, human studies, and secondary data analyses. Particular areas include improving outcomes across the care pathway from screening to therapy to living beyond cancer and understanding how nutrients may modify the risk of recurrence. Professor Corfe has supervised over 20 PhD, MD, and MPhil students to successful completion. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nutritional Science, a member of the WCRF grant panel, and President Elect of the Nutrition Society.
