About Bethany

Dr. Bethany Letiecq is a professor of research methodology in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. She holds a PhD from the University of Maryland at College Park. Her work centers on family-centered, community-based participatory action research approaches, anti-racist research methods, and mixed-method designs conducted in partnership with minoritized and marginalized families. Dr. Letiecq’s research examines state-sanctioned inequities and administrative burdens faced by nontraditional families, including mixed-status immigrant families, LGBTQ+ families, cohabiting couples, and single-parent headed families, while also exploring how families adapt to and resist structural racism and inequality to advance systems change and social justice.

She teaches courses including qualitative research, anti-colonial methodologies, participatory action research, and critical praxis in education. Dr. Letiecq serves as faculty co-advisor to the Anti-Racist and Decolonizing Research Collaborative and contributes to related graduate certificate programs. She sits on the editorial boards of the Journal of Marriage and Family and the Journal of Family Theory and Review. Dr. Letiecq is past president of the National Council on Family Relations, having served as president-elect from 2021 to 2023 and president from 2023 to 2025. She holds affiliations with the Council on Contemporary Families, the American Sociological Association, and the American Educational Research Association. In addition, she serves as vice president of United Academics Local 6741 of the American Association of University Professors and the American Federation of Teachers, president of the GMU chapter of the AAUP, and past president of the Virginia Conference of the AAUP.
