About Bhavik

Bhavik Anil Patel is Professor of Clinical and Bioanalytical Chemistry in the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Brighton. He joined the university as a Lecturer in 2010 and progressed to Professor in 2019. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences from the University of Brighton in 2002 and completed a PhD in Bioengineering at Imperial College London in 2005. Following his doctorate, he was awarded an EPSRC Life Sciences Interface Postdoctoral Fellowship, during which he conducted research at Michigan State University, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Calgary.

Patel’s research centres on the development of advanced electrochemical sensing platforms, including 3D-printed electrode technologies, to monitor biomarkers in the gastrointestinal system and to detect falsified or substandard medicines. He also leads educational research focused on technology-enhanced, inclusive learning approaches that improve student employability and equity in STEM education. His contributions have been recognised with awards including the GlaxoSmithKline Emerging Scientist Award in 2013, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Science Award in 2015, the Royal Society of Chemistry Excellence in Higher Education Prize in 2021, a National Teaching Fellowship in 2022, and the RSC Analytical Science Mid-career Prize in 2023. In 2023 he was named among the top 100 most influential leaders in analytical science by The Analytical Scientist. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a Fellow of the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FAPS), a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), and a National Teaching Fellow (NTF). He teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in analytical chemistry within the School of Applied Sciences.
