Professor The Honourable Bill Shorten serves as Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Canberra, a position he assumed in February 2025. He was conferred the title of Professor of Practice at the University of Canberra on 1 December 2025. Prior to this appointment, Shorten had a distinguished career in Australian politics and union leadership, including 18 years as a federal Member of Parliament, six years as Leader of the Opposition, and ministerial roles such as Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Minister for Government Services. He retired from politics in January 2025 to take up the vice-chancellorship.
Shorten holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws from Monash University, as well as a Master of Business Administration from the Melbourne Business School at the University of Melbourne. His early career included work as a lawyer and leadership positions with the Australian Workers’ Union. As Vice-Chancellor, he has emphasized the transformative power of education and the university’s role in equity, inclusivity, and community contribution.
