Professor Bob Marshall served as Associate Professor and Foundation Head of the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Auckland, establishing the department in 1997 after sports science began at the university in 1994. Originally from Canada, he previously taught at the University of Otago and the University of Western Australia. His research focused on biomechanics as a sport scientist, with work on tennis, squash, cricket, softball, and yachting that assisted New Zealand coaches and athletes, as well as projects evaluating health initiatives and practices. In 2002, he was appointed as EIT’s first research professor and later served as Research Director at the Eastern Institute of Technology, where he continued as Research Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences and contributed to enhancing research quality and performance-based funding processes. He has published more than 160 refereed articles and presented over 150 papers at conferences worldwide. His career appointments and leadership roles advanced the development of sport and exercise science programs and research in New Zealand.
