About Brad

Brad Epperly is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of British Columbia Okanagan, where he also serves as Program Coordinator of Political Science. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Washington, an MA from the European University at St. Petersburg, and a BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. Prior to his current position, Epperly was an Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina and a postdoctoral fellow at the European University Institute in Florence.

Epperly’s research focuses on the rule of law, judicial independence, law and politics, democracy and authoritarianism, and postcommunist politics, with additional work on the use of law and violence in the post-Reconstruction American South. His book, The Political Foundations of Judicial Independence in Dictatorship and Democracy, was published by Oxford University Press in 2019. Selected publications include articles in Perspectives on Politics, Political Research Quarterly, Social Science History, and the Journal of Law and Courts. He received the Michael J. Mungo Undergraduate Teaching Award at the University of South Carolina. Epperly is co-founder and co-director of UBC Open Inquiry at UBC Okanagan.
