About Braden

Braden Manns is a Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine, Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary, where he serves as Senior Associate Dean, Health Research and Associate Vice President, Health Research. He is also the Svare Professor in Health Economics and a kidney specialist. Dr. Manns earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Saskatchewan in 1990, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto in 1994, and a Master of Science in Health Administration from York University in 2000. He completed specialty training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the University of Calgary.

His research focuses on nephrology, health economics, and health care policies, with interests in the impact of healthcare system structures, cost-effectiveness of strategies for managing chronic diseases, and implications of physician payment models. Dr. Manns holds a CIHR Foundation award in health system funding and was co-principal investigator of a CIHR-funded patient-oriented research network in chronic disease. He previously served as Associate Chief Medical Officer at Alberta Health Services and lead for Strategic Clinical Networks, as well as Interim Vice President on two occasions. He is Past-President of the Canadian Society of Nephrology and has served on provincial and national committees for drug evaluation, including as Chair of the Canadian Expert Drug Advisory Committee from 2006 to 2008.
