Dr. Brett Hemenway Falk is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania. He serves as director of the Crypto and Society Lab, which focuses on privacy and security in digital environments and on facilitating transparency and trust. His research employs tools from mathematics and computer science, with primary work in cryptography and coding theory aimed at developing mathematically rigorous algorithmic solutions for real-world problems, including protocols for secure computation that enable collaboration without sharing sensitive data or relying on a centralized trusted authority. He has also conducted projects analyzing the technical foundations of blockchain systems and developing new solutions based on rigorous mathematical design principles. Dr. Falk received his Sc.B. in mathematics from Brown University and his Ph.D. in mathematics from UCLA. He teaches a popular course on blockchain technology in Penn’s Master’s in Computing and Information Technology program. His research has received funding from the National Science Foundation, DARPA, IARPA, the Office of Naval Research, the Army Research Lab, the National Institutes of Health, and the Laura and John Arnold Foundation.
